Canon R1 – The Flagship

Speed, Precision, and Reliability

The Canon R1 is designed for photojournalists, sports photographers, wildlife shooters, and other professionals who can’t afford to miss a shot. As the flagship of the EOS R line, this mirrorless camera features a full-frame 24MP BSI stacked sensor, DIGIC Accelerator processing, next-gen Dual Pixel Intelligent AF, and a robust design expected from a professional workhorse.

Stacked Sensor and DIGIC Accelerator

24.2MP Full-Frame Sensor and Continuous Shooting

The Canon R1 boasts a newly designed 24.2MP full-frame back-illuminated stacked sensor, offering fast readout speeds and an impressive 40 fps top continuous shooting rate with an electronic shutter. This enables blackout-free viewing and significantly reduces rolling shutter distortion. The back-illuminated design and new DIGIC Accelerator processing enhance clarity and sharpness, support native sensitivity up to ISO 102400, and utilize Neural Network Noise Reduction for clean files in low-light conditions.

Continuous and Pre-Continuous Shooting

The 40 fps shooting rate, combined with Pre-Continuous Shooting, allows the camera to pre-buffer 20 frames over a 0.5-second period while half-pressing the shutter, ensuring you never miss critical moments. The EOS R1 also features a mechanical shutter, supporting a top continuous shooting rate of 12 fps.

In-Camera Upscaling

For situations requiring higher resolution, the DIGIC Accelerator processing enables In-Camera Upscaling, doubling the pixel count both horizontally and vertically to produce a 96MP image in about 10 seconds. This can be done post-capture or during cropping, saving time compared to generating and then cropping a 96MP image.

DIGIC Accelerator and DIGIC X Processing

The newly developed DIGIC Accelerator front-engine processor complements the proven DIGIC X processor. This combination allows the camera to handle large data volumes, perform simultaneous tasks at high speeds, and enhance deep learning features like In-Camera Upscaling and Neural Network Noise Reduction.

  • Auto-Exposure and Auto White Balance: Use deep learning for accurate exposure metering in various lighting conditions.
  • Coordinated Image Stabilization: Pairs IBIS with lens-based IS.
  • Anti-Flicker and High-Frequency Anti-Flicker Shooting: Supported for better performance in various lighting environments.

Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization

The EOS R1 employs a comprehensive image stabilization system using in-body sensor-shift, optical, and Movie Digital IS for video.

  • 5-Axis Sensor-Shift System: Compatible with all lenses, it reduces camera shake for sharper handheld shots.
  • Coordinated Control IS: Delivers up to 8.5 stops of correction with RF lenses.
  • Movie Digital IS: Electronic stabilization for suppressing blur in peripheral areas during handheld video recording.

Next-Generation Autofocus

Dual Pixel Intelligent AF

The R1’s AF capabilities are optimized to detect, track, and maintain focus on moving subjects, even when briefly obscured. The Dual Pixel system is fine-tuned for responsive and accurate focusing, especially in scenes with linear details.

  • Cross-Type Dual Pixel AF: Enhances focusing performance in detailed scenes.
  • Low-Light Focusing: Capable down to -7.5 EV for photos and -5.5 EV for videos.
  • 4897-Point Phase-Detection System: Automatically recognizes people, animals, and vehicles, with eye detection prioritization.

Action Priority + Subject Detection and Tracking

The DIGIC Accelerator introduces Action Priority mode for photographing sports and action, recognizing specific movements and automatically adjusting the AF area.

  • Subject Recognition: Identifies and tracks specific subjects and movements.
  • Custom Function Button: Allows quick toggling of Action Priority mode.
  • Pre-Registered Person Priority: Stores up to 10 registered individuals for prioritizing focus during events.
  • Intelligent Subject Recognition: Maintains focus on intended subjects, even when obscured.

Eye Control AF

Inheriting Eye Control AF from the EOS R3, the R1 improves with 2x faster detection and a revised line-of-sight algorithm, accommodating different eyelid thicknesses, eyelash lengths, camera holding positions, and eyeglasses.

Professional Reliability and Design

9.44m-Dot OLED EVF and Rear LCD

The R1 features a 9.44m-dot OLED EVF with 0.9x magnification for clear, bright viewing. The viewfinder’s optical design is upgraded for improved clarity and fog prevention. Additionally, a rear 3.0″ 2.1m-dot touchscreen LCD with a vari-angle design supports high and low-angle shooting.

Built for the Professional Image-Maker

  • Magnesium Alloy Exterior: Dust- and water-resistant with full protective sealing.
  • Integrated Vertical Grip: Enhances ergonomics and includes updated rubber for comfort and traction.
  • High-Capacity LP-E19 Battery: Reliable and long-running power source.
  • Dual CFexpress Type B Slots: Support high-speed recording modes and proxy recording.
  • Dual Shooting Mode: Allows simultaneous capture of 17MP JPEG stills and FHD 30p video.

Versatile Connectivity

The R1 integrates seamlessly into professional workflows, supporting connections to recorders, tethering, external strobes, and file transfers.

  • Full-Size HDMI Port: For video output.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C Port: Supports tethering, data transfer, and in-camera battery charging.
  • Ethernet Port: 2.5GBASE-T wired LAN connection for FTP transfers.
  • Multi-Function Shoe: Provides power to select accessories and supports Wi-Fi 6E/Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth Low Energy for wireless transfers and control.

Video Capabilities and Cinema EOS Integration

6K Raw and 4K Video

The EOS R1 excels in video capabilities, supporting 6K 60p raw recording or 4K 60p MP4 recording with a 6K oversampling area. Proxy recording expedites post-production by splitting recording formats across two memory cards.

  • 6K 60p Raw Recording: Using full sensor width.
  • 4K 60p Normal Recording: For up to 120 minutes.
  • High-Speed Recording: 4K 120p and FHD 240p options.
  • Raw and XF-HEVC S/XF-AVC S Formats: Supported for professional workflows.
  • Custom Picture Profiles: Include Canon Log2, 3, PQ, and HLG.
  • Full-Size HDMI Type-A: For external recording.
  • Additional Features: Include false color, zebra display, tally lamp functions, and LPCM 24-bit/4-channel audio.

The Canon EOS R1 combines speed, precision, and reliability, making it the ultimate tool for professional image-makers across various fields.
